| I crossed the bay on the Bodwell as well as the Vinalhaven
and North Haven many times. I know the forward deck of the North
Haven was enclosed and think but am not sure the Vinalhaven's
was. If you stood aft on deck, just as on a train with open windows, one
could get a cinder in the eye. When on deck I stood by the pilothouse.
To this day I get a thrill as the ferry rounds the bend to face Carver's
Harbor. On the return trip I am emotionally moved as the blue Camden Hills
come into view.
Depending on the tide one boarded by gangplank to lower deck or gangway to the upper deck.
Christmas Eve on the steamer was like old home week with those returning
home for Christmas. Year after year acquaintances were renewed on the boat.
