Memories of the Boston Boat |
|
Dorothy French, in a letter dated March 3, 2001: Mom and Dad would take my brother and me down to Camden to take the boat to Boston. My brother was 14 years old and I was seven. My Dad knew the Capt. of the boat. So they knew we were in good hands. We would go to Boston and my Uncle Sam or Aunt Carrie or Aunt Lila would meet the boat and take us to Corona Long Island to visit with my Garmma Stoddard. What a trip. I can remember 3 different times. We were treated royally. People wouldn't dare do things like that today.
There were times that Mom & Dad would go with us, too. |

| Katherine Brown, in a letter dated March 3, 2001:
[the mail brought]... copies of Freeman's postcards of the Waldo-Hancock bridge and Fort Knox. When my Dad retired and we returned to Rockland in the fall of 1937- my Junior Year at old Rockland High when I first met your Uncle Gar at 16; the Boston boats had ceased running. As a girl of 10-11 when we lived 2 years at Ft Schuyler, a wonderful Ft. Knox-like 1812 fortress where the East River meets Long Island Sound (now hidden under the Bronx Throgg's Neck Bridge) we used to see those wonderful steamers- many side-wheelers- running by on their busy schedules! The card for Fort Knox said "in ruinous condition" but as you may know it is now a favorite tourist sight and well care for. |
